Pets Make Great Companions!

It's an enormous responsibility being a pet owner. Just choosing your animal companion can be difficult as there are so many different pets, each having their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on YOUR personal situation. First you'll need to decide on what kind of pet you want to share your life with. Are you looking for a specific type of animal companion; a dog, cat, fish, bird... or perhaps something more exotic or unusual like a rat, hermit crab or tortoise? Is there a particular breed you are looking for? If the pet is for your children you'll want to consider what type of pet and breed is most suitable. It's worth doing some research to find out each breed's temperament and suitability. One factor that is often overlooked is if anyone in your family has an allergy to, or phobia about, any particular animal. Consider how much room you have for your pet. Small puppies and kittens WILL grow into larger, more active animals who take up more room as they get older. Consider also the type of equipment they'll require such as kennels, litter boxes, cages, food storage etc.
Another point to consider is how much time you'll have to spend with your pet. If you have a busy lifestyle it may mean you'd be better off with a pet such as a gold fish, bird or hamster who require less time and attention than a dog, cat or horse. While these animal companions may require LESS attention, they'll still depend on you to look after them.
Lastly, how much can you afford to spend on a pet? You'll need to consider the initial purchase as well as the cost of any vaccinations, equipment, food and regular veterinary needs.
Once you've decided on the pet that's best suited for you and your family, be sure to give it the time and attention that it deserves. By being a caring, responsible pet owner you'll be rewarded with a loyal and loving animal companion for life.
